A.   OBJECTIVES
The students are expected to master the:
1.    Language        : at the intermediate level (5000 words)
2.    Content           : details, main ideas, relationships
3.    Text structure  : types of writing, organization
4.    Reading skills : at the intermediate cognitive level

B.   CONTENTS
The main purpose of the course is to develop the student’s reading proficiency in English up to intermediate level (approximately 5,000 words) related to mastery of finding main idea, topic sentence, supporting sentence/supporting details, and implicit and explicit meaning on some kinds of text. The students will be exposed to narrative, descriptive, and simple expository texts or other text which can improve students reading ability. Language exercises will include intermediate lexical to the reading texts.

C.   ACTIVITIES
1.    Class Activities
The students will have to participate in discussion and exercises on the language, contents, and structure of a text.
Before-Class Activity: including preparation on the-coming-topic by reviewing the underlying theory and/or explanation, attempting to apply the theory on exercises, marking problem(s) found in this activity for class discussion.
Class Discussion: focusing on the discussion, analysis, practices on the related topic after an introductory presentation by the lecturer. The lecturer, however, is entitled to use various methodology meant to accomplish the course objectives

2.    Homework
The students will be assigned to:
a.    Study a text prior to its discussion in class.
b.    Do the comprehension and language exercise.
c.    Making summary of all material given and discussed as a hand out (collected before final examination)

F.    EVALUATION
The evaluation used is Portofolio techniques, it means that the factors which determine learners passed or not depend on some factors, namely (1) its activeness in any kind of learning, such as their presence, classroom discussion, doing their task, quality of article (20%), and properness of doing task (30%), (2) Task and assignment of final product (50%). There is no definite test.

G.   SCORE:
80 – 100       = A
70 – 79         = B
60 – 69         = C
40 – 59         = D
0 – 39           = E

H.   SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDENTS
1. Students who are late for more than 10 minutes are not allowed to join the class.2. Students whose presence is less than 80% of the total attendance are prohibited to take the final test.3. Wearing clean, neat and polite dress during the lecture is a MUST.4. Students may consult the lecturer about any unclear material and rules of the lecture/subject at any available and convenient time.5. Must be active in the class during discussion and teaching learning process.
